According to the Prison Rules of the Corrections Department of the Ministry of Justice, the Investigation and Classification Section is responsible for the following matters:
- Prison Orientation for inmates
- Direct investigation and Indirect investigation of inmates
- Physical and Psychological test of inmates
- Social resource needs assessment, referral and advocacy of inmates
- Fingerprints, photographic classification and data storage of inmates
- Research, review and recommendations on the treatment of inmates
- Contacts After-care and protection of inmates after releasing from prison
- Other related investigation classification and social work matters.
Investigation and classification business is an indispensable part of the criminal correction work of the correctional organs, and in order to start the work of the correction business, after the inmates enter the corrections system, whether or not the principle of individual punishment can be implemented depends on the good quality of the investigation and classification business.
- At the beginning of the incarceration, the new inmates shall be tested and investigated by scientific methods, and the case information shall be collected, such as photographic, personality, intellectual ability, physical and mental condition, education level, professional expertise before entering the incarceration, family environment, social background, religious beliefs, entertainment interests, criminal process and causes, etc., and shall be summarized, analyzed and judged, and appropriate individual treatment plans shall be drawn up, so as to provide correctional officers as the basis for the treatment.
- Conduct a review of the cases in the implementation, synthesize the suggestions of correction, implement a review mechanism, deliberate and deal with the proposals, and use the method of tracking and management to ensure that each inmate can obtain the most appropriate education and upbringing measures, introduce social resources, and assist the inmates to repentance and redress through the social experience of rehabilitation counseling volunteers, so as to prepare for resocialization. In addition, in order to encourage inmates to serve their sentences with peace of mind, referral services are provided especially for family members who have suffered family changes, poor family circumstances, or children who have no one to take care of them, and seek social assistance resources, so that they have no worries, feel the warmth of society, and rehabilitate themselves.
- Carry out a pre-release investigation in order to prepare for release, and contact the local branches of the Rehabilitation Protection Association and local employment service stations who are willing to provide rehabilitation counseling or employment services for follow-up counseling for inmates. For rehabilitated persons who have insufficient custody funds to support their travel expenses to their hometowns, who have no relatives and are elderly, weak, physically and mentally disabled, unable to support themselves, seriously ill, have to registrate household registration, skill training, or have entrepreneurial needs, coordinate with local branches of the Rehabilitation and Protection Association or social welfare organizations to handle relevant subsidies, assistance, resettlement and assistance matters.
- Conduct employment surveys after release to understand the living conditions and employment situation of rehabilitated persons after their reintegration into society and provide necessary assistance, so as to help rehabilitated persons gain a foothold in society, provide for their support, be useful and avoid recidivism.
